Deciding how to select the right penny stock can be a very difficult process. Some of the reasons that penny (or “small cap”) stocks are notoriously difficult to choose include the often little public information about these small stock companies, the possibility of the penny stocks having artificially inflated values, and the wide number of penny stocks that are currently available. There are three different steps that many investors find of use to help with narrowing down and filtering the choices available when it comes to micro-cap investing.
First, there is penny stock screening software programs. Stock screeners are used by a wide variety of investors, brokers and analysts for both small cap and regular stock investments. Sophisticated software is able to sort stocks by a wide variety of criteria and help you select the best performing stocks available. Doing this kind of analysis manually would take hours, even days. There are a wide variety of stock screening programs available, some are available free online from places, like Google Finance, while other sophisticated stock screeners may require a monthly fee or one time fee to use.
Next, there is reviewing the information provided by the Securities and Exchange database. Once you have picked a stock you are interested in, you should certainly check out that stock using the SEC database. This information is free, and you should be able to find out some of the basics about even small companies using a SEC database search.
Finally, you should checking out public information, opinion and general stock analysis regarding that particular stock on message boards, stock investing websites and in online and printed stock review publications. You do need to be very careful with this step, however, as many small companies will pay individuals to make positive stock recommendations. Sorting through the hype and finding a true investment can be a challenging process at times. You certainly should not trust a single post on a message board or on twitter by an enthusiast of that certain penny stock, since it is very likely that may be a paid endorsement.
