If you’ve reached this article, it is likely you are eager to begin buying penny stock. However, I will instead warn you that this is a financial field fraught with peril and infested with sharks eager to exploit novice investors.
I don’t mean to dissuade you entirely from online investing or buying penny stocks. I just want you to begin this risky business right; learn the widespread fraud schemes and how they operate before you break open your wallet and endure real financial risk.
Why You Shouldn’t Trust Anyone Pushing You to Buy Penny Stock
With the increasing expansion and ease of the Internet, many new financial and investing opportunities have become available to a much wider spectrum of individuals. However, this also means decades-old fraud schemes have quickly propagated and evolved in the online world.
In just the last five years, trading penny — or microcap — stock has been the subject of tremendous hype. This, however, is not because it is a source of easy riches. Instead, it is because a disturbingly large number of unscrupulous businessmen have discovered a vast online forest of investing novices ripe for the exploiting.
From over-enthusiastic forum posts to so-called microcap stock newsletters and silly stock-picking robots, the channels these fraudsters use to exploit people new to online trading is at once impressive and disturbing. The bottom line, however, is to not trust anyone pushing you into buying penny stock. Don’t even trust anyone hyping some kind of guaranteed system for making riches with penny stocks.
The Primary Buying Penny Stock Schemes to Avoid
There are essentially two types of schemes you need to avoid. There are, in fact, many more than this out there, but these two manifest themselves in different ways and make up the majority of the situations you need to avoid as you sift through the Pink Sheets and the OTCBB (the quotation services where you’ll find these kinds of stocks).
The Pump and Dump
This classic has persisted for decades, but it is now all the more effective and widespread because of the Internet. The basic premise here is that penny stocks are incredibly volatile and susceptible to manipulation. To exploit that fact, a group of savvy but unscrupulous investors will select a low value penny stock and contrive elaborate hype around it.
With this hype, they push novices and impatient, compulsive investors into buying penny stock of low value in huge volumes. The result is that the stock experiences a sudden spike in market value.
Just as the penny stock spikes in value, the investors behind the hype dump it, knowing it doesn’t actually have any long-term value. All the people suckered into buying this penny stock are left with a tough-to-sell stock with nosediving value.
The Boiler Room Sale
The boiler room sale may sound obvious at first, but sharks manage to manifest it in a clever and diverse number of ways. The basic premise of this scheme is just to trap you in a high pressure “you must act now” sales pitch. The point is for lame brokers to earn big commissions and small, sketchy companies to increase the value of their stock. The two often work together to contrive circumstances for these pressure sales.
In the past, boiler room sales often occurred over the phone. But today they’ve moved to ostensibly trustworthy online communities.
A couple examples are email newsletters (which are also ripe with pump and dump schemes) and membership forums. In these areas, you are sold a personality and a warm sense of community. You are slowly brought to “trust” the community and its operators. Then from out of nowhere an incredibly aggressive sales pitch is dropped on you. You’re given all kinds of warnings that it is a once-in-lifetime “sure thing” investment and that you must engage in buying penny stock now or you’ll regret it the rest of your life.
Because you’re already caught up in a community you think you trust, you may not recognize the hard sale being shoved upon you. Often times, you’ll see boiler room tactics used to help a pump and dump scheme.
Only You Should Pick the Penny Share to Buy
So as you begin on this voyage towards buying penny stock, begin with care. I didn’t mean to scare you away entirely; you really can make some good money through trading these microcap stocks.
But you must understand that like everything else in life, success requires you exercise your due diligence and take responsible action to succeed. Choose your own hot stock picks. Don’t let someone else tell you what to buy and when to begin buying penny stock.
